Van Morrison likes Las Vegas enough, or likes staying put enough, to have added two additional dates to his previously scheduled five-night winter engagement at the Colosseum inside Caesars Palace. Seven shows over three weekends is heaven for Vegas-bound Van Morrison fans, some of whom may have seen him playing multiple nights when he first performed as a solo artist in the late ’60s, or possibly before then, when he would play in Sunset Strip nightclubs as frontman of his Belfast-based band Them. Morrison brings his repertoire and six-decade legacy as a live performer to Caesars Palace, and he owes it all to his father’s extensive record collection.
Morrison was shaped by the access he had to his father’s extensive collection of blues, country and gospel at a time when peers were limited to buying records as they could afford them. By the late-’50s, he was a professional musician, scored hits with Them such as “Gloria” and “Here Comes the Night,” during the British Invasion and went solo with the 1967 single “Brown Eyed Girl.” He’s recorded prolifically ever since, starting with classic albums such as Astral Weeks and Moondance, and most recently with jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco and his trio on 2018’s You’re Driving Me Crazy and The Prophet Speaks.
