The term “world music” encompasses a wide range of sounds from all over the globe, but French band Gipsy Kings truly embodies the spirit of making music for the world. Founding members Nicolas Reyes (lead vocals) and Tonino Baliardo (guitar) grew up in the south of France in a community of Spanish Romani, and their music reflects that diverse upbringing, combining the sounds of flamenco, salsa and rumba with pop, rock and folk. The group’s worldwide hits include “Bamboleo,” “Djobi Djoba,” “Volare” and Spanish-language versions of the Eagles’ “Hotel California” (memorably featured in the movie The Big Lebowski) and Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” (from the Toy Story series).

Reyes and Baliardo have been playing music together for more than 40 years, and they keep the Gipsy Kings name alive with consistent touring around the world. Latin music has exploded in popularity in the years since the Gipsy Kings broke through to the mainstream in 1987, but the group has forged its own path, thanks to the members’ unique cultural identity and embrace of sounds from a variety of sources. The world of world music continues to open up for them.
