The title of Citizen Cope’s new album Heroin and Helicopters was inspired by a conversation the rootsy, resilient singer and songwriter had with the legendary Carlos Santana, who told Cope to stay away from the two H-words since both have had fatal results for musicians. It was more than a darkly funny piece of advice. Cope (real name: Clarence Greenwood) took it as a metaphor for addiction and instant gratification, two of the themes of his first album in seven years, which has already gained accolades from Billboard, NPR Music and more. He’s bringing his new music to Las Vegas for an intimate performance at the Linq Promenade’s Brooklyn Bowl concert hall on March 29.
Must-See: The Righteous Brothers
It was only three years ago that Bill Medley selected a new partner to join him in The Righteous Brothers, and it wasn’t a decision he took lightly. Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003 and everyone knew that Hatfield could never be replaced. But when the man with the memorable bass-baritone that made so many songs so special for so long watched his friend Bucky Heard performing the music of Journey, he realized there was another powerful voice that could create the same dynamic contrast that made The Righteous Brothers’ music resonate. Hear it for yourself at Harrah’s Showroom Tuesdays through Thursdays.
Around the Strip
The annual One Night for One Drop production and gala at Bellagio and imagined by Cirque du Soleil raised more than $1.1 million for the One Drop foundation’s safe water access initiatives earlier this month. After an astounding original production at O Theatre featuring performances by Blue Man Group and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, the celebration moved to the Bellagio pool where Mark McGrath, Third Eye Blind and Boyz II Men took their turns onstage. Attendees bid on six live auction items including a McLaren 570S Spider and a one-of-a-kind Audemars Piguet timepiece.
