Bomb Food

Atomic Liquors has long been a favorite for Vegas locals, but the renaissance of downtown and Fremont East in the last few years brought an influx of new customers, and adjacent restaurant Kitchen at Atomic responded by upping its dining game.

Grab a drink first—the Life’s a Beach reminds you somewhat of a mai tai, with pineapple rum, lime, fassionola syrup, cinnamon and an amaro float. Spring pea salad is as pretty as it is delicious—crunchy snap peas and asparagus work wonderfully with English peas, watercress and yogurt. Entrées include ribeye with za’atar spiced potatoes, swordfish and a porterhouse pork chop. A juicy hanger steak comes with grilled fennel and radicchio. The grilled halloumi cheese in a summer herb salad is shareable, but vegetarians may want to reserve the entire dish as their entrée, although a side of the intensely spiced charred carrots would make an excellent alternative. –Nina King

New Explorations

Seminal classic rock band Jefferson Airplane provides the wellspring for multiple spin-off acts, including long-running collective Jefferson Starship, originally founded by Jefferson Airplane guitarist Paul Kantner as an outgrowth of his solo work. Jefferson Starship officially debuted in 1974, following the dissolution of Jefferson Airplane, with Airplane members Kantner and Grace Slick as the core of the lineup.

Since then, the band has undergone numerous shifts in style and personnel as it carries on the legacy of both Jefferson Airplane and its own hit-packed catalog.

Those hits include “Miracles,” “With Your Love,” “Count on Me,” “Jane” and “Find Your Way Back,” representing the band’s range of sound from pop and adult contemporary to epic arena rock. Although Jefferson Starship hasn’t released any new material in recent years, and Kantner passed away in 2016, the band, led by longtime members David Freiberg and Donny Baldwin, continues to tour regularly, paying tribute to bandmates like Kantner and the retired Slick, who’s given the current lineup her blessing. As the band’s website touts, “The members of Jefferson Starship past and present have been exploring the mysteries of music for more than 1,000 collective years.” They’ll keep exploring, in various forms, for years to come. –Josh Bell
