The hard rock of the ’90s joins forces with the hard rock of the ’10s as Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons team up for a co-headlining tour. STP was one of the most successful bands of the grunge era, thanks to huge hits like “Sex Type Thing,” “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline.” The San Diego rockers combined vintage influences like David Bowie and Aerosmith with the burgeoning sound coming from Seattle, giving it all a commercial sheen with catchy riffs and smooth vocals from singer Scott Weiland. Weiland passed away in 2015 after a long struggle with drug addiction, but the band honors his legacy with new singer Jeff Gutt, performing classic material as well as new songs with the same timeless rock feel.
Fellow California hard rockers Rival Sons have a bit of a bluesier sound, and they’ve worked extensively with alt-country superproducer Dave Cobb. But they’ve also spent time opening for heavy rock titans like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Kiss, and they’re one of the few bands keeping old-school rock alive in the mainstream, with radio hits like “Keep on Swinging,” “Do Your Worst” and “Too Bad.” Together, the two bands are bridging the rock generations.
