More Cowbell!

Blue Oyster Cult has been rocking and rolling for more than 50 years now. What’s amazing about their longevity is that the band built their audience through hard-driving, full-throttle, macho live performances, which continue to be a main element of their success today.

“(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” might have peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard charts in 1976, but the prog rock jammer remains a staple on classic rock radio and, more importantly, is etched into pop cultural history thanks to the legendary Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell, which tells the (imagined) story of how the song was produced. It’s now impossible to hear the song and not think of the line, “I got a fever, and the only prescription … is more cowbell!” A half of a century later, Blue Oyster Cult is still “Burning For You.” –Jason Harris

Vegenation

Plant Yourself

Vegans, rejoice! At hip downtown eatery Vegenation (616 East Carson Ave., 702.366.8515), every single item you see on the menu is vegan. Every. Single. Item. So, no scouring the menu to try and find those plant-based dishes, and no need to worry if any of the vegetarian dishes are dairy-free. The choices are plentiful, but the best thing about Vegenation is that everything is seriously delicious (vegetarians, meat eaters, pescatarians, whatever type of eater you may be—everyone will leave with happy tummies).

Open for all three meals, Vegenation recently introduced its weekend brunch menu. Highlights include: the elote tamale, filled with meaty chunks of non-GMO masa, baked corn and Parmesan cheese and topped with a delish secret sauce; biscuits and gravy, just as good as the classic rib-sticking original, served with a memorable side of braised collard greens that are slow-cooked with molasses; steamed bao made with tempura tofu and a shitake hoisin topping; and tempura avocado tacos with all the taco fixings.

For a true revelation, order the chicken n’ waffles. It’s worth a trip all by itself, served with crispy breaded chicken, fluffy and sweet waffles and a small dollop of secret, creamy sauce made with a tinge of jalapeno that marries amazingly well with some drizzles of syrup. You’ll be planning a return trip to experience the lunch and dinner menus long before you’re walking out Vegenation’s doors. –Kiko Miyasato
