When L.A. band Silversun Pickups broke out in 2006 with the rock radio hits “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles,” the band was labeled a ’90s throwback, with a distortion-heavy guitar sound. Since then, the band has developed its sound over the course of five albums, bringing in a wider dynamic range and incorporating more electronic elements. But Silversun’s ’90s connections remain strong, and the band recruited alt-rock legend Butch Vig to produce 2019’s Widow’s Weeds.

All Music called Weeds, which was inspired by singer-guitarist Brian Aubert’s journey to sobriety, “one of Silversun Pickups’ most emotionally satisfying and cathartic listens,” and Slant Magazine said that “the album presents a band brimming with reclaimed confidence and vitality.” In concert, Silversun envelops the audience in distortion, lending power and intensity to songs that may be a little more subdued on record. The band has been around long enough now that new artists could be creating throwbacks to the Silversun sound, and after starting out in the shadow of the past, Silversun has established its own strong musical identity.
