Whatever you think you know about the human body, you may be seriously surprised by what you discover at REAL BODIES at Bally’s, an inclusive exhibit that takes you on a journey through the different parts of not just human anatomy, but life itself.
Divided into sections like circulatory, muscular and nervous, as well as birth, love and death, REAL BODIES leaves no kidney stone unturned in its quest to educate us about what the body is capable of—for example, did you know that the saliva you produce over a lifetime can fill two swimming pools? Or that the volume of air that your lungs inhale daily can fill two hot air balloons? These small factoids, planted all over the course of your journey, are just the co-star in this production. The main event is definitely the bodies themselves, posed in various ways to illustrate what the body can do. It’s all possible through a process called plastination, and it allows looks into the ways the body works you’ve never seen before.
Plastination allows BODIES to use its subjects in not just educational ways, but philosophical. As you look at the displays in the love and death section, you begin to feel a deep sense of your own mortality, examining the choices you’ve made in your life, and realizing how much you still have left to do. And it’s impossible to not be moved by the section on fetuses in various stages of development. Like life itself, BODIES is a humbling experience.
And in a nod to our current predicament as a country and a planet, BODIES now features COVID-19 content, including 3D printed COVID-19 virus models and a short film explaining how the virus reacts to your body and how it is spread. As you make your way through the various sections, you’ll be able to read quick facts about the virus and how it affects each of the different body systems.
