When Whitney Houston exploded onto the scene in the mid-’80s with “Saving All My Love For You,” her appeal was impossible to ignore. And for years, her string of hits guaranteed you’d hear her on the radio on a regular basis. But somewhere along the way, Houston made the leap from great voice and hitmaker to legendary superstar, a consequence of not only her career choices—including a truly untouchable version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” for the movie she starred in, The Bodyguard—but her tumultuous lifestyle, including a very-public up-and-down relationship with Bobby Brown.
Nearly a decade after her untimely passing, Houston remains a beloved figure to millions who treasure that transcendent voice (who else but Houston could reach the top 20 of the U.S. Top 100 with a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”?) And for the first time in North America, you can enjoy that voice in a production show at Harrah’s, An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert. While Houston has been re-created thanks to state-of-the-art special effects, this is a production show in every other traditional sense, with a live four-piece band and backup dancers choreographed by Fatima Robinson.
If you’ve ever seen the hologram technology in Las Vegas before (whether currently in Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay or in the past when Celine Dion’s Caesars Palace residency featured Elvis), you have some idea of the amazing evening you’re in for. You’ll swear Houston is actually on the stage, belting out classics like “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “The Greatest Love of All” and a cover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love.”
The show is a partnership between Houston’s estate and BASE Hologram, and her former manager and estate president Pat Houston called the show “another chance for us to relive and celebrate the talent that we were so lucky to receive for more than three decades.”
