When Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll wrote nonsense poem Jabberwocky, he could not have predicted its title would inspire the name of a hip-hop dance crew that would become world famous. Jabbawockeez in action are the equivalent of Carroll’s freestyle approach to language. You don’t have to know what Carroll meant exactly in the poem’s opening lines, “’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves/ Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,” to be able to flow with his skill and vision.
The slithy toves of Jabbawockeez flow with skill and vision when they gyre and gimble in the wabe of their fourth headlining Vegas show on the south end of the Strip. The signature white masks and gloves worn by the dancers emphasize the all-for-one and one-for-all attitude shared by Jabbawockeez, whose corporate officers come from within the ranks. They take care of their own business.
That business is creating a wonderland of dance and continuing to evolve the vision of the founding trio. Two of them, Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe “Punkee” Larot, are still with the group that now includes some 20 core and auxiliary members.
Headquarters is Las Vegas via long-running residencies, but the America’s Best Dance Crew winners make high-visibility appearances such as at the 2022 NBA Finals. Wherever the stage, every step the Jabbawockeez take is poetry in motion.
