Roger Earl was once quite possibly the hairiest drummer in British rock, but he may now qualify as happiest. Founding Foghat member Earl keeps the legacy of the band alive with killer musicians and an active performance schedule that includes downtown Las Vegas. Bassist Rodney O’Quinn, singer/guitarist Scott Holt and guitarist Bryan Bassett burn through boogie-down classics such as “Slow Ride” and “Fool for the City” that bridged the gap between blues rock and early heavy metal.

Earl, the precision pounder of the band that built that bridge, and singer/guitarist “Lonesome” Dave Peverett formed Foghat with slide player Rod Price and bassist Tony Stevens. Their 1972 debut, Foghat, was an instant hit. A cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You” exemplified the souped-up sound that the band expanded on with Foghat (Rock and Roll).

Foghat’s fourth album, Energized, included “Wild Cherry,” a track that has nothing to do with the band that scored a No. 1 hit in 1976 with “Play That Funky Music.” That song’s memorable seven-note riff was played by former Wild Cherry guitarist Bassett. Peverett and Price passed in 2000 and 2005, respectively, but Bassett shares Price’s passion for playing slide on Gibson SG guitars, bringing it all back home in more ways than one.
