As far as slices of heaven amidst the hustle and bustle of the Strip go, the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is unsurpassed. Only a few steps away from the Bellagio’s lobby, the Conservatory creates the perception of bucolic attunement with nature via five installations a year. Spring thaws, summertime solstices, fall harvests, winter wonderlands and lunar new years are all interpreted by a Bellagio botanical supergroup guided by designer Ed Libby.

The schemata for Year of the Rabbit will be the latest attempt by Libby and company to top all previous seasons’ concepts. It’s a lofty goal that’s led to gingerbread holiday extravaganzas, homages to giants of design, explosions of floral inspiration and animatronic elements of ingenious conception. The effect of extreme efforts can result in guests instantly grabbing phones to capture scenes for social media or being too overwhelmed to consider looking at the scenes through a separate lens.

How the Bellagio Botanicals interpret the Year of the Rabbit remains to be seen at press time, but the possibilities are endless. Libby has a penchant for repurposing elements from previous installations and an instinct for how scenes will look with the daylight coming through the Conservatory’s lattice ceiling versus how the same dreamscapes look against a nighttime backdrop.
