Welcoming a bit of chaos in your night’s plans from time to time makes the best stories for your friends at home. And you can intentionally infuse your night out with a heavy dose of nonsense when you score tickets for the Blue Man Group, the long-running show that seamlessly combines tantalizing tunes with silly shtick to create the perfect 90 minutes of entertainment.
Even before the show starts, you know you’re in for a great time as comedic messages and instructions are sent to the audience via word-scrolling screens on either side of the stage. Just as the audience is getting into the bit, the curtains open and the Blue Men begin the pounding percussion they’re known for. The musical elements of the show satisfy even when they’re not being made with traditional instruments. If anything, this show, with its ingenious inventions, proves that anything can be used to make melodies.
Auditory elements aside, this show also uses a full range of visual elements that tie it together. You can count on seeing the neon paint these performers are known for, splattering from drums, PVC pipes and even their mouths, but you’ll also see impressive lighting, innovative use of set pieces and physical comedy–lots of the latter.
As nonspeaking performers, the group often relies on facial expressions and movement to carry across their punchlines, and they do it effortlessly. Their mimelike movements, mixed with their curious exploration of the stage and theater, transforms the Blue Men into lovable yet confusing characters, which makes the absurdity that ensues onstage exceptionally enjoyable.
Taking time to shame latecomers as the performers pause for them to find their seats, creating art by spitting edible paint onto canvases, and calling a volunteer onstage for a not-so-appetizing meal of Twinkies are just a few bits of buffoonery that the Blue Men have in store.
