Regardless of how you regard dance acts, it’s hard not to be swept up in the incredibly positive vibes provided by Jabbawockeez and the newest incarnation of its ever-evolving show, Timeless. While dancing is at the core of this show, it’s so much more than that: it’s theater; it’s audience participation; it’s the entire range of human emotion. And it’s really true to its title.
Troupe founders Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe “Punkee” Larot (as well as about 20 core and auxiliary members) are still showing off the skills that won them acclaim on America’s Got Talent in 2006 and that won them first prize on America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008. All members wear essentially the same gear, with masks making them indistinguishable from one another. It’s an ingenious tactic, one that makes you focus on the dance instead of individual personalities. (Plus, it just looks cool!)
Throughout the show, you’ll see dance moves from various eras, from hip-hop to zoot suit swing. The soundtrack is as equally varied, and its eclectic nature comes in particularly handy during an audience karaoke segment. Various members volunteer, having no idea what they’re about to sing. It’s always hilarious, and connects audience members in a very distinct way. Connection is ultimately the point of Timeless. Through the moves of the faceless, we see how alike we all are. Some of us are just better dancers, that’s all.
