Music, visuals and humor combine seamlessly in the surreal but immensely entertaining Blue Man Group, a long-running Strip production that continues to amaze, hypnotize and propel audiences out of their chairs to move and groove.
As a live band delivers propulsive beats, the Blue Men demonstrate many things:
• A great desire to stick as many things into their mouths during a typical show as possible, from splattering gumballs (which they then spit onto canvases) and Cap’n Crunch to marshmallows and Twinkies;
• A curiosity as to what sounds different inanimate objects will create. This includes the aforementioned breakfast cereal, PVC piping and very large smart phones;
• An energy that keeps them in constant motion, whether while sharing a Twinkie with a “lucky” audience member, teaching the audience various moves made famous from music festivals, or moving throughout the audience, stopping occasionally to look around, confused.
Throughout all these displays, the Blue Men manage to create entertainment that is truly universal. There is no dialogue in the show, save for the occasional intro by a disembodied narrator or an announcement every time audience members show up late. Indeed, this show is an adept reminder of the power of music, the universal language that unites the globe. The Blue Men may not have united the globe quite yet, but darned if they aren’t trying.
