You know the rhythm is right when drummer Roger Earl pounds out the beat behind the rough-and-ready riffs of “Slow Ride,” Foghat’s biggest hit and a cornerstone of classic rock. Earl, a rock ’n’ roll survivor whose energy continues to drive the band 52 years after its formation, is preparing to release Foghat’s latest album, Sonic Mojo, with bicoastal release parties scheduled for November in New York City and San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

A track from the album, “Drivin’ On,” is available for streaming. It was written by the late Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, the band that Earl and singer “Lonesome” Dave Peverett played in before Foghat. Sonic Mojo is Foghat’s 17th studio album since the group’s 1972 self-titled debut, which established the quartet’s hard rock sound and Peverett’s distinctive high-energy vocals on covers of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline.”

“Slow Ride,” marked by Rod Price’s churning, greasy slide guitar playing, appeared on 1975 album Fool for the City. That song and the title track assured Foghat a place on the tour circuit as long as Earl wants to power its engine. With the other three original members having passed on, Earl renders the classics with longtime guitarist Bryan Bassett, bassist Rodney O’Quinn and vocalist Scott Holt, who joined the band last year replacing Charlie Huhn.
