The Particle Ink venue, right by the top of the Atrium level escalators inside Luxor, quickly gained a reputation for being a can’t-miss experience on the Strip for fans of next-level entertainment. The immersive House of Shattered Prisms evening show combines puppetry, contortion and dance artistry, surreal and expressionist scenic design and hands-on experiences threaded together with a loose narration that follows the hero’s journey of an animated figure named Particle.
A vestibule that leads to Particle Ink’s maze of rooms is both an introduction to the design motif and characters brought to life inside. Particle (“the sun and the son of Luminkind”) is joined by an animated cast that includes Feather, daughter of Captain Quad Majestus and devotee of the Sisterhood of the Lightknife, and Ferrous, a gentle giant and security guard to the Bib-leo-teks cave, who eats broken toys.
High Priestess Photon and elephantine Lord Snipette also await beyond the curtain of smoke that leads to a hallway where cans of luminous spray paint enable spontaneous wall tagging with glowing graffiti. A room on the right contains “lumicorns,” hand-held horns that can shoot at less-desirable animated figures moving across a wall.
Particle and the overall atmosphere are somewhat reminiscent of the works of artist Keith Haring and illustrator Ralph Steadman. The latter created the design and cartoons for Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but there’s nothing to fear here. The innocence inherent in Haring’s character creations is similarly present in Particle and the gang.
