The songs of Michael Jackson occupy a rarefied air that few other artistic creations achieve. His entire catalog is celebrated by fans more than a decade after his untimely passing in 2009, and since then his estate has generated more than $2 billion. Not only do songs like “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” gets us on our feet and dancing, they never seem to age. It’s a big reason why fans return again and again to Michael Jackson ONE, Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to the King of Pop.
For the uninitiated, ONE takes Jackson’s most iconic songs and brings them to vibrant life through a series of vignettes that Cirque excels at: Acrobatics, dancing, aerial maneuvers and so much more. And while many Cirque productions are more cryptic in the story that’s actually being told, ONE follows a relatively linear storyline: A group of “Misfits,” each representing an aspect of Jackson’s essence, are pursued by bad guys throughout the show, in the process embarking on journeys of self-discovery. There are four iconic elements of Jackson’s image—a hat, sunglasses, pair of shoes and a spangled glove—that come into play during the course of the show.
The real highlight of ONE comes near the end, using state-of-the-art technology to … well, let’s just say you’ll love the way it will make you feel.
