Do you want to add some extra cheer to your holiday season? ’Twas the Knight at Excalibur has you covered in more ways than one! The seasonal production by Tournament of Kings takes all the very best elements of the medieval-themed show and adds in a holiday twist.
You will still learn to shout “Huzzah!,” you’ll still eat with your hands and drink from a tankard, you’ll still watch the kings of many nations battling it out for bragging rights and cheer for your king of the evening, and yes, the evil dragon-king will still wreak havoc on the festivities. But there’s definitely more.
It starts as mist rolls across the arena, and a jester and king’s minister wave to the crowd. Then appears a festively dressed lady on a gorgeous white horse, sweeping through the arena, followed by two richly arrayed damsels who assist as lady and horse perform a bit of dressage for you and foreshadow the merriment to come.
Once you’ve been properly put in the festive mood, you’ll get a short tutorial about how to cheer on your king and go through a rousing round of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” adapted to the holiday medieval theme. Then you’re in for a night of colorful costumes, including a Merlin who looks suspiciously like Father Christmas and an English king (who looks like a king, of course). There’s also a round table descending from above to provide a stage for dancing ladies and valiant knights.
But, of course, the dragon king must make his appearance, using fire as a handy weapon, and it comes out that his shadow is casting a stain over the spirit of Christmas. Perhaps all the revelry and the tournament ahead will clear the air and restore the Christmas spirit. The knights go head-to-head with each other on horseback, throwing javelins and jousting, and end up with feisty hand-to-hand combat. Will your king win? It gets more heated and serious when the dragon knights crash the party in a fiery rage. Can the English king send them packing? (Spoiler: Yes, he can, and the dragon lord gets a smoking present as well.)
As the celebration draws to a close, the spirit of Christmas may send a snow shower drifting down and that gorgeous white horse may be seen once again. Huzzah!
