Ask any classic rock fan to list their favorite live albums, and more often than not the answer is likely to include Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan, an album that was playing on every turntable at parties in 1979 and beyond. (It made No. 13 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 50 live albums of all time.) That Cheap Trick is remembered so fondly for a live album is entirely appropriate, for the band, which still includes original members Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom Petersson, has performed live more than 5,000 times since its formation in 1973!
The band’s unmistakable sound is a mix of power pop and rock, and its hooks are some of the most memorable of the era, particularly in classics like “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me” and “Dream Police.” And Cheap Trick, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, is also capable of switching things up in concert and having a lot of fun performing classic albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (which they did at a series of Las Vegas shows more than a decade ago at Paris Las Vegas).
In other words, you really have no idea what to expect from a Cheap Trick show. But that’s exactly why you need to go.
