Barry Manilow’s return to his Las Vegas residency this week carries an extra-special significance: He’s now ours almost exclusively. The superstar songwriter, singer and entertainer recently wrapped his final U.S. tour (dubbed The Last Concerts) in July, meaning that if you want to see Manilow in concert from now on, you’ll have to get a plane ticket to Vegas.
Manilow might have turned 82 over the summer, but with a lifetime residency commitment from his host property, he’s not slowing down anytime soon, not as long as his legion of fans continue to throng to the International Theater to see their hero continue to make history—he long ago broke Elvis Presley’s record of performances there (636), meaning every show sets a new mark.
Of course, as important as the history books are, what really matters is the show itself. Manilow is still a master showman, strutting and dancing around the stage as he takes audiences on a journey through his extensive catalog, everything from “Mandy” and “I Write the Songs” to “Weekend in New England,” “Even Now” and “Ready to Take a Chance Again.” “Copacabana,” Manilow’s showstopping number, is where the event really shifts into another gear. And what better song for Vegas than one about a showgirl?
