Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience is a self-guided exhibition that re-creates the many treasures that archeologist Howard Carter discovered more than a century ago in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. What Carter unearthed changed archeologic digs forever, and a vast catalog of King Tutankhamen’s life clued the public into the daily life and reign of the Boy King. 

As you step inside the amazing re-creations (every piece you view is a reproduction of actual artifacts discovered) of all the treasures unearthed, you’ll discover a plethora of facts like the ailments that plagued the king (he didn’t live past 19 years old) including a clubfoot, cleft palate, curved spine and severe immune issues, and even theories of what might have caused his death. Read up on the significance of gold in Egyptian culture; learn how the mummification process works and why it was important to maintain the body for the afterlife; and discover the codes of hieroglyphs and the stories they told. 

You’ll also get to browse through the contents of four different rooms Carter and his crew dug up—the lower-level annex, treasury room, burial chamber and nested coffins of King Tut. The star of Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience is the re-creation of King Tut’s sarcophagus. It includes three nested coffins made from gold, colored glass and semi-precious stones, with the final coffin made entirely out of solid gold. You’ll also view the death mask placed upon King Tut’s mummified body, a mask that weighed more than 22 pounds and was constructed of gold.
