Can you do anything 53 times in a row, in one minute? Bradley Hess can, and did—even when a wind tunnel, weightlessness and mind-dizzying somersaults were a part of the task. In fact, Hess went into the Guinness World Records for his feat: most forward somersaults in a wind tunnel in one minute. The record-breaking event was recorded in Las Vegas last month at Vegas Indoor Skydiving, where Hess is general manager.
At Vegas Indoor Skydiving, guests can experience body flight—an adventure that’s similar to skydiving, without the plane and thousands of feet between you and the ground. The simulated free-fall experience takes place inside a vertical wind tunnel that stretches 22-feet high and is outfitted with a mesh trampoline floor and foam-padded walls. Underneath sits a DC-3 propeller; this is the device that creates winds up to 120 mph.
Each flier gets three flights to test out their skills, with the first move starting you out on your belly on top of the net, and in seconds getting you up in the air. The next two tries are more adventurous. Each flight is about one minute long, and doesn’t require any experience. But, for safety, you will be accompanied by an instructor, who will even fly next to you, or spin you, or flip you in circles once you’re airborne. If you’re brave enough, you might even want to try out a forward somersault … just not 53 of them quite yet.
