For jam bands, the live experience is essential. No matter how many studio albums bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish put out, what really sticks in people’s memories are the epic concerts. Philadelphia six-piece Dr. Dog may not be a traditional jam band, but they are known for stretching out and improvising in concert. To get a taste of the Dr. Dog live experience, you can pick up the band’s new live album Live at a Flamingo Hotel.
“We wanted to make it feel like an actual record, instead of just a live thing,” bassist/vocalist Toby Leaman told the Wall Street Journal about Flamingo Hotel, and since the band’s shows are all different, culling tracks from 20 different performances resulted in a completely unique album.
Of course, the best way to get a taste of the band’s live experience is to actually hear them live, playing the mix of psychedelic rock and Americana that they’ve honed over eight studio albums. “It doesn’t matter if you see us in Chicago or L.A. or Memphis, we’re going to bring it wherever we are,” Leaman told the Wall Street Journal. And if you see them in Las Vegas, they’ll be bringing it here, too.
