Fifteen years ago, Rascal Flatts released “Prayin’ for Daylight,” their first single that peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts. Since then, Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney have charted 15 No. 1 singles and been the most-awarded country music group of the past 10 years.

Now, the trio has put another notch in their history belt, becoming the first country act to land a residency at the Hard Rock Hotel. The band is now in the midst of Vegas Riot!, at The Joint through March 14.

“You know, it’s something we talked about for a long time,” said lead singer LeVox before the residency began. “When the opportunity came up at the Hard Rock, it was a no-brainer. We were thrilled to death just to be stationary over there. It was really cool, too, to be the first act in country music to do it at the Hard Rock. It’s another first for us in our career.”

With the show, they bring a hefty catalog of hits, including “Here Comes Goodbye,” “My Wish,” “I Melt” and “Bless the Broken Road” from their eight consecutive studio albums that reached No. 1.

Don’t expect to hear these songs as they sound on the albums, though. LeVox says the band created a whole new show just for the Hard Rock Hotel with a different band and more background singers.

“You know, it’s gonna be a pretty good mixture of mostly songs that have been hits for us, but we’re doing those songs in ways that they’ve never been done before musically, instrumentally and vocally. It’s a whole new take on songs like ‘What Hurts the Most’ and ‘Life Is a Highway,’ songs that have been really big hits for us. We’re doing them completely different then we’ve ever done them before. It’s a whole new flavor and a new flair.”

It’s a whole new look as well. Audiences are seeing a show never before revealed, LeVox said. The band generally plays much larger venues like stadiums, so Rascal Flatts tightened up the theatrics for the 4,500-seat Joint. “We’ve taken some really good parts of our arena tours and we’re putting some pieces of that in there,” LeVox said. “We’ll only use it in Vegas. As soon as our residency is over, we’re putting together a whole new show for the summer tour.”

A bonus for their fans? The potential for guest stars to get up onstage with the band. LeVox wouldn’t say who that might be, but added that some of his West Coast friends may be in the audience. Craig Wayne Boyd, the season seven winner of The Voice, opens for the band with his own No. 1 single, “My Baby’s Got a Smile on Her Face.”

Through the success, the members of Rascal Flatts have kept a sense of humor—right down to the name. “We used to say it was Swahili for ‘my cousin.’ That was one of them,” LeVox said. “We say it to people and they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, that is unbelievable. I never would have known.’”
