Thanks to the success of the recent N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, the Southern California rap scene of the ’90s has been experiencing a bit of a resurgence. The West Coast Feast celebrates artists who’ve worked closely with stars of the L.A. rap scene, featuring group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, rapper and producer DJ Quik, duo Tha Dogg Pound and reggae singer Collie Buddz. Together, they’ve collaborated with artists including Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s biggest hit is the mournful “Tha Crossroads,” a tribute to the late West Coast icon and former N.W.A. member Eazy-E, who was the group’s mentor. Other Bone Thugs hits include “1st of tha Month” and “Thuggish Ruggish Bone,” both from the group’s early days in the mid-’90s. As a producer, DJ Quik worked on a number of classic 2Pac records, as well as albums by Snoop Dogg, Jay Z and 50 Cent. As implied by their name, Daz Dillinger and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound are longtime Snoop Dogg friends and collaborators. And Collie Buddz has added rap verses from the likes of Snoop Dogg and Bone Thugs’ Krayzie Bone to his reggae songs. Together they represent a cross-section of the best in the West Coast rap scene.
