Listen, do you want to know a secret—do you promise that you’ll tell? There’s Fab Four fun to be had at The Beatles LOVE, a marriage of mop-top musicality and Cirque du Soleil artistry.
In an impressionistic tableau, LOVE features 60 performers exploring the iconic band’s song catalog through scenes starring both real people and imaginary characters. Aerial acrobatics, freestyle dance and extreme sports turn the tribute into a circus-style dreamscape.
Fanciful figures that come to life via Beatles classics include Eleanor Rigby, the Walrus, Lady Madonna, Sgt. Pepper, the Nowhere Men, the Fool and Lucy. Another character, Julia, evokes Julia Lennon, mother of John.
In a loose story structure, they bring the Beatles’ biography to life from the band’s birth and climb to global phenomenon, through their psychedelic and spiritual phases and on through their 1970 breakup. Interpreting the journey are acts including rope contortionists, swing acrobats, bungee and trampoline artists, skaters and urban-style free runners.
Inventively scoring the show, LOVE samples a whopping 120 songs to create 27 separate pieces, many mixed so the arrangements and lyrics blend from one to another.
By show’s end you’ll want to catch the nearest yellow submarine to an octopus’ garden in the shade where you can stroll between tangerine trees under marmalade skies.
