The Stone Foxes’ Koehler brothers carved out an independent career by mixing something old with something new. The old is a sound that borrows from classic rock and blues, as demonstrated on classic covers such as “I’m a King Bee” and “Little Red Rooster” from the band’s early set lists, and originals such as “I Killed Robert Johnson.” The new is the band’s unabashed licensing of songs—if you’ve heard “King Bee” in a Jack Daniels commercial you’ve heard the Stone Foxes. In the new world order of the music industry, “selling out” is an anachronism and advertising opens the door to freedom and third and fourth albums.
The San Francisco band released its latest full-length Twelve Spells last year, and has a coast-to-coast slate of shows this summer that’s reconnecting them with fans. Shannon and Spence Koehler are joined by bassist Vince Dewald, guitarist/violinist Ben Andrews, drummer Brian Bakalian and keyboardist Elliott Peltzman in the current incarnation of the Stone Foxes, which originated as a quartet featuring founding drummer Aaron Mort and current Goodnight, Texas member Avi Vinocur. The sextet lineup allows the band to stretch out musically without sacrificing its reputation for delivering its custom blend of blues-rock.
