Beck may have debuted during the alt-rock boom of the ’90s with a single that came off to some as a novelty, but in the subsequent decades he’s established himself as one of the most versatile and accomplished performers in popular music. With its goofy, catchy refrain (“I’m a loser, baby/So why don’t you kill me”), Beck’s 1994 hit “Loser” sounded like an anthem for slackers, but its creator proved himself to be anything but.
He’s been remarkably prolific since his first hit, with albums that encompass folk, hip-hop, rock and more, always providing something unexpected for his fans. He brings that eclectic portfolio to Brooklyn Bowl at The Linq Promenade.
Over the years, Beck has collaborated with musicians ranging from Jack White and The Lonely Island to the Flaming Lips and Philip Glass. In 2012, he released Song Reader, an album available exclusively as sheet music, with 20 original songs designed to be performed by other musicians. He’s currently working on his latest album, a follow-up to 2014’s Grammy-winning Morning Phase, and he released new single “Dreams” in June as an album preview. “Dreams” was designed to give Beck something new to play on tour, but he certainly has no shortage of material to draw from. Not bad for a slacker.
