At first glance, hard rock band Silverstein and poet/illustrator Shel Silverstein may not appear to have much in common. But the members of the Canadian band named themselves after the renowned author of children’s books—who also was a songwriter with hits penned for Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash.
Silverstein’s music is pretty far from the country and folk that Shel Silverstein wrote, but the band is similarly ambitious, mixing melodic hooks with heavy metal intensity for a sound that reaches both mainstream and hardcore audiences. The band’s 2009 album, A Shipwreck in the Sand, is a concept album about a mutiny at sea, a story that Shel Silverstein himself might have loved. And the 2012 album Short Songs is exactly what it sounds like: songs that clock in under 90 seconds. The most recent Silverstein album, 2015’s I Am Alive in Everything I Touch, is another concept album, split into four chapters. Like their namesake, Silverstein is always exploring new territory and reaching new audiences.
