If you see Ana Gasteyer’s name on a marquee, it would be understandable to think she’s there to perform stand-up. After all, Gasteyer is a well-known comedy star who spent six seasons on Saturday Night Live, and has played supporting characters on sitcoms like Suburgatory, The Goldbergs and Lady Dynamite. But Gasteyer has actually never been a stand-up comedian, and she’ll be at The Smith Center not to make audiences laugh, but swing.
Gasteyer has always had a love and talent for music, starting with her early training as a violinist, going through her college days as a voice major and culminating with runs in Broadway musicals like Wicked and The Threepenny Opera. She’s recently released her first album of jazz standards and jazzy versions of pop songs, I’m Hip, which includes takes on everything from big band staple “Cheek to Cheek” to Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” She brings a playful sense of humor to her musical performances, but her vocal chops are no joke.
