When the Avengers first assembled in the 1963 debut issue of their eponymous comic book, there was no way creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could have known they were launching a legacy that would expand into animation, countless spinoffs, a movie franchise and, finally, a Scientific Training and Intelligence Operative Tactical Network located in Las Vegas. Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. opened at Treasure Island last May, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in all things Avengers while training to become agents of S.T.A.T.I.O.N. For Marvel Comics fans, it’s an attraction whose time has come.

Most of the original Avengers comic line-up are represented in their Marvel Cinematic Universe form, with Captain America’s exhibit coming first on the walking tour. The evolution of 4F World War Two enlistee Steve Rogers into a red, white and blue superhero, thanks to an experimental serum, is related with illuminated displays that look designed for a movie set. Interactive features allow agent trainees to gauge coordination and grip strength. An app available as a mobile download or handheld S.T.A.T.I.O.N. device continues to provide audio narration as the Captain America room leads to Bruce Banner’s laboratory, where the Hulk’s brain can be examined via video monitors.

Some heroes’ costumes are assembled together in display rooms (Black Widow, Hawkeye), while others have entire rooms dedicated to their legacy. Thor’s hammer is mounted in a large room, surrounded by a semicircle of floor-to-ceiling displays dedicated to the god from Asgard, where guests can vainly attempt to wield it with their mortal strength. The Iron Man room has multiple Stark Industries-designed suits on display, including a primitive prototype and gargantuan Hulkbuster. The Vision’s birth cradle and wormhole-generating Tesseract are represented in all their sci-fi wonder.

Both science and fiction are well represented in general. There’s a lot of reading that can be done, with the S.T.A.T.I.O.N. itself serving as an educational primer for all things Avengers. Novices can be schooled on the backgrounds of many main characters and plot elements while more advanced trainees can expand on their knowledge base with esoteric information. Einstein’s influence on the fictional space portals of Asgard is explained, and Iron Man Neural Interface Training enables guests to experience flight and fight simulation through the power of their own eyesight.

The interactive aspects of Marvel’s Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. reach a climax at the end of the training, with visitors taking on the powers of one of six Avengers to fight super-villain Ultra as a team. More interaction awaits in the 7,500-foot retail section, where action figures, apparel and other assorted collectibles are for sale. It’s a good 60-to-90-minute experience depending on how much interaction and information one can handle in one visit, but for fans of Marvel’s most venerable superhero team it’s a rare chance to be fully immersed in a universe that once only existed in comic books and imaginations.
