The members of Haim are cool enough to be good friends with (and open for) Taylor Swift and to collaborate with hot producers like BloodPop, Twin Shadow and Dev Hynes on their recent sophomore album Something to Tell You, but they’re also retro enough to be heavily influenced by ’70s and ’80s soft rock and to geek out over performing with Stevie Nicks or covering a Shania Twain song. That puts the band (featuring sisters Danielle, Este and Alana Haim) in a unique position, bridging the increasingly large gap between rock and pop in current music.

Haim’s songs (“The Wire,” “Want You Back” and “Little of Your Love”) are as catchy as anything on pop radio, but their hooks have a slightly more organic quality, and they’d be equally at home on the radio three or four decades ago, alongside Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty or Phil Collins. At the same time, there are modern synths and beats all over Haim songs, and those in-demand producers contribute a lot to the band’s overall sound. The sisters are multitalented musicians, singing, writing and playing numerous instruments, and their mix of modern and retro adds up to something timeless.
