Music and Fashion

Mama’s got a brand new bag. Celine Dion recently expanded her presence in the fashion world beyond the handbag line she launched at Nordstrom last year, and the music icon did it in a daring way. Celinununu is Dion’s gender-neutral children’s clothing line, a stylish expression of freedom, equality and empowerment for kids.

“It’s not that we’re hoping to shift gender norms with Celinununu. It’s more about offering (a) choice and giving children a chance to feel free to find their own individuality, their own true essence without being tied to stereotypes,” Dion recently told style source Refinery 29. “I think that every child needs to have their own identity, to express themselves freely, and (to) not feel like they have to be like someone else.” It’s an earnest and important message. And for Dion, whose 8-year-old twins Eddy and Nelson are rocking the gear, it’s a natural progression.

“Both music and fashion are a way to express yourself creatively and, of course, in the case of live performances, they go hand-in-hand,” she said. “When we’re working on my stage outfits, we’re obviously thinking about the song that I’ll be performing, what it’s about and how that idea or feeling can be expressed through fashion.”

Dion returns to the Vegas stage this month, resuming her residency at the 4,300-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace for a three-week run. While 2019 will be her last year at the venue where she has revolutionized the idea of the Las Vegas Strip headliner for the past 15 years, it is shaping up to be a busy one for Dion, whose first English-language album in five years is expected in January.

Her most recent single, “Ashes,” just powered the Deadpool 2 soundtrack to a Grammy Award nomination, a clear indication of her current musical momentum. –Brock Radke
