When Adam Ant launched his 2012 U.S. tour, he was returning to stages in America after a 17-year hiatus, but in the time since then he’s been a regular fixture on the American touring circuit, often paired with other popular new wave rockers from the 1980s. Ant had a period in the ’90s and ’00s when he stepped away from the music business entirely, and he went 18 years between albums before releasing Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter in 2013.

But he returned to critical acclaim (The Guardian said Blueblack Hussar was “as riotous as he’s sounded in three decades”) and a substantial audience. Ant’s current Anthems tour showcases hit singles from throughout his career, and it’s just as likely that he’s playing for diehard fans who waited years for him to return as it is that he’s playing for younger music listeners who first discovered ’80s Ant hits like “Antmusic,” “Prince Charming” and “Goody Two Shoes” many years after they were first released. “I am constantly surprised when I look out,” he told Forbes last year. “It is pretty varied and that has been the case pretty much from when we returned to play live.”
