Some artists whose popularity peaked in past decades resist embracing nostalgia, but Art Alexakis of ’90s alt-rock band Everclear has not only embraced it, but has also turned it into a successful brand. In 2012, he founded the annual Summerland Tour, which highlights fellow alt-rock bands from the ’90s on the lucrative summer tour circuit. Past tours have teamed Everclear with artists including Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray, Soul Asylum, Fuel and more. This year, Everclear will be joined for the second time by Marcy Playground (who played the first Summerland Tour in 2012), along with debuting Summerland act Local H.

As the tour’s headliners, Everclear has a slew of familiar hits to play, including ’90s radio favorites “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine,” “Everything to Everyone,” “Wonderful” and “I Will Buy You a New Life.” Marcy Playground and Local H have one major chart-topping hit each (“Sex and Candy” and “Bound for the Floor,” respectively), but both bands have remained active, releasing new material and touring regularly. Everclear, too, has consistently toured and put out new music (including 2015’s Black Is the New Black), so while they may be happy to embrace nostalgia, they’re still looking forward.
