The members of Mexican pop trio Reik grew up in Mexicali, near Mexico’s border with California, so they’ve always been influenced by English-language music. At the same time, Spanish-language music has become more popular than ever, with mainstream hits like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” and numerous acts from Latin America touring successfully in the U.S. and around the world. So that gives Reik the opportunity to grow its fan base, something that’s already happening thanks to recent singles “Ya Me Enteré,” featuring urban pop star Nicky Jam, and “Me Niego,” featuring rapper Wisin and reggaeton singer Ozuna. Both songs hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. “You’re gonna see a bunch of things in that area that really interest us just because of what people are listening to and our approach to that kind of music,” guitarist Julio Ramírez Eguía told Billboard in April about the band’s expansion beyond traditional Latin pop sounds, starting with 2016 album Des/Amor. Singer Jesús Navarro echoed that sentiment to told the Arizona Republic last year: “We’re thankful that the trend is now for Latin artists to try new things.” His band is in just the right position to take advantage of that trend.
