Otep Shamaya does not mess around. The lead singer and namesake of heavy metal band Otep has been channeling her anger into intense, powerful music since her band’s 2002 debut album Sevas Tra, and she never hesitates to speak her mind, whatever the consequences. Just look at some of the song titles for Otep’s pointedly titled upcoming eighth studio album Kult 45, which include “Hail to the Thief,” “Halt Right” and “Trigger Warning.”

As a poet, singer and activist, Shamaya has made a career out of getting people to listen to what she says. At the same time, there’s more to Otep’s music than just delivering a political message. “It’s important for fans to know that this record is not just an indictment of Trump,” Shamaya said in a statement announcing the album. “The idea is rather to empower people to stand up and remind them this is our country and we have the power.” As strong and impactful as her own voice has been, in rock radio hits like “Warhead,” “March of the Martyrs” and “Smash the Control Machine,” Shamaya’s on a mission to ensure that all of her fans have the chance to be heard.
