To call the members of Fortunate Youth versatile would be a serious understatement. The reggae-rock sextet has a constantly rotating lineup, with all of the members taking on various positions in the band depending on the song and the mood. The band from the Southern California coastal town of Hermosa Beach has been at the forefront of reggae in the U.S. since releasing its debut EP Up-Lifted in 2010, featuring the reggae hit “Burn One.” Since then, the band has had three albums top the Billboard reggae charts, including its 2017 self-titled release, which features guest appearances from fellow SoCal reggae-rockers Slightly Stoopid and Jamaican reggae star Kumar Bent.

The band members’ penchant for switching things up musically is just one factor that contributes to the vibe of a Fortunate Youth performance, which is always upbeat and full of energy. “The fans can expect a lot of features and all of us switching up instruments and jamming together,” the band told AXS at the launch of the current tour. Bringing in influences from punk, rock, ska, blues and more, the members of Fortunate Youth are in the position to expand reggae’s sound and audience, with positivity, musical prowess and that endless versatility. –Josh Bell
