“Like what could you possibly see in a failure like me?” the band Knuckle Puck asks in the middle of their song “Disdain” off of debut album Copacetic from 2015. Those are the type of lyrics that fit perfectly with the modern emo sound created by the five-piece outfit from Chicago. The group, which formed in 2010, began as a cover band. Within a year, they were writing original material and with the screaming vocals of singer Joe Taylor, quickly found love from fans of early 2000s emo music and modern pop punk aficionados. It’s easy to relate to songs like “No Good” from 2013 EP The Weight That You Buried. One doesn’t have to be a specific gender or age to join in with the crowd and chant along to the chorus, “It’s people just like you who made me the pessimist I am.”
