Colombian-born singer-songwriter Juanes is one of the biggest stars in Latin music, having racked up more than 20 Latin Grammy Awards and sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Growing up during a turbulent time in Colombia’s history, Juanes found salvation in music, drawing influences from rock, reggae, hip-hop and folk to create a unique sound. With his 2000 debut solo album, Fijate Bien, he began to achieve success outside his native country, and these days he tours around the world and collaborates with stars like Nelly Furtado, Tony Bennett and Colbie Caillat. He also supports younger Latin performers, including Chilean singer-songwriter Mon Laferte, pictured, who’s opening for him on his current tour. Well known in her native country (she was even a judge on the Chilean version of The X Factor), Laferte is just starting to reach out globally, as Juanes did at the start of his solo career. She recorded a duet with Juanes, “Amarrame,” on her 2017 album La Trenza, and the two have formed a musical bond. “There are people you only need to speak to briefly and you’re understood,” she told Miami New Times about their collaboration. It’s inspiring to see an international superstar dedicated to nurturing new talent.
