Of the many things we can thank Prince for, one of the best is launching Sheila E. into the world of solo superstardom with “The Glamorous Life.” The song, with its infectious groove, was written by The Purple One for Apollonia 6, but found its way to the super percussionist in a twist that must have been fated. Other solo hits include “A Love Bizarre” and “Holly Rock.”

Still an in-demand musician and a ferocious drummer, she’s collaborated with artists including Cyndi Lauper, Beyoncé and Herbie Hancock. She’s been a part of several supergroups including Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Sheila E. even held it down as a television band leader for the late-night talk show The Magic Hour with host Magic Johnson.

She may always be best known for her connection with Prince. The two played together on-and-off through the years, including at the 2006 Brit Awards. Ten years later, with the New Power Generation backing her, Sheila E. performed a tribute to Prince at the BET Awards and the next day released “Girl Meets Boy,” a song dedicated to him.

Today, Sheila E. regularly plays both solo and with many other artists—catch her in Vegas and revisit the musical force that Prince knew.
