Instrumental rock bands rarely get the kind of attention reserved for bands with lyrics and vocals, but in the world of progressive rock and post-rock, instrumental acts are some of the biggest stars, including bands like Animals as Leaders and Explosions in the Sky, who regularly draw huge crowds for their live shows. You can add San Diego instrumental quartet Chon to that list, thanks to its growing fan base and appearances on the Billboard album charts. With music that combines influences of heady rock subgenres with jazzy, electronic and even surf-rock sounds, Chon has a unique style that reflects the band’s Southern California beachside origins. That’s also reflected in the welcoming title of Chon’s sophomore album, Homey, which was released last summer. All Music called the album “vibrant, summery, and friendly,” as well as “complex yet highly listenable,” and that combination of intricate musicianship and laid-back accessibility has helped Chon reach a wider audience than many other wonky prog-rock bands. For this tour, Chon is joined by another up-and-coming instrumental rock group, Polyphia, proving that there’s still plenty of potential left in playing music without words.
