It might not exactly be accurate to call Circa Survive a supergroup, but the founding members were all part of influential emo bands before coming together in 2005. Former (and future) Saosin vocalist Anthony Green joined with former members of This Day Forward and Taken to form Circa Survive following the members’ splits from their respective previous bands, and they took all their experience and influences with them. The result was a musically ambitious new project, both instrumentally and lyrically, and Circa Survive quickly became one of the most important bands in the emo boom of the early ’00s.

Over time, the band’s music has become more expansive, progressive and diverse, while also reaching a wider audience. The most recent Circa Survive album, 2017’s The Amulet, debuted in the top five on the independent, alternative and rock album charts, and Alternative Press said that the band’s “subtle yet ever-continuing evolution remains a compelling thing.” A deluxe version of the album, with two bonus tracks, was released earlier this month, to coincide with the band’s current tour. As Circa Survive’s music continues to challenge and grow, the members have transcended their early band and genre origins to create something entirely new.
