The current arc in post-hardcore quartet Thrice’s career began when the band came back from a three-year hiatus and released To Be Everywhere Is to be Nowhere in 2016. The follow-up and ninth studio album Palms was released in September, and continues in the progressive direction the band has been heading in since 2005’s Vheissu, with surging, cascading riffs providing the foundation for Guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue to deliver earnest, thought-provoking lyrics on top of. Guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge and drummer Riley Breckenridge have matured, as has their sound.
The band still plays it hard and fast for the faithful, but Palms album closer “Beyond the Pines” is an emotional ballad that has reportedly moved grown-up Thrice fans to tears at the conclusion of the main sets before they rip into “Deadbolt” and “To Awake and Avenge the Dead” for the encore. Thrice took a break before resuming the tour, which brings them to South America for the first time in their history. That history could extend for years to come now that Thrice has made Epitaph Records its home, a match made in heaven for followers.
