Classic Continuation

You might be more familiar with Rod Stewart’s years of working through the Great American Songbook but the inimitable rocker has been writing new songs again for the last five years.

He dropped another original album, Blood Red Roses, in September, and he’s been using his ongoing residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace—where he’ll return Nov. 21 through Dec. 2—to break in some of those new songs. “I’ve had tremendous success in selling millions and millions of albums, so I’m not that bothered if it doesn’t sell 10 million,” Stewart said about his latest creation to Rolling Stone recently. “I’ve had my shot at it. I’m making albums for me and a few friends.”

Turns out his longtime fans still enjoy Stewart’s songwriting, too.

“Last year after Oct. 1, we started the Vegas Strong Hero of the Game. We wanted to keep that going but branch off a little bit to recognize some local heroes that go unnoticed, people who work all day and come home and do something for the city or a charity or just to help other people out. We started Engelland’s Vegas Born Heroes that way and we started small this year, but we’re hoping to grow it into something where we can give back to more people or raise money for the community, or just helping out as much as we can any way that we can.”

The Comedy Cellar at the Rio has been running full-speed since opening in the spring, packing in big happy audiences and all the same stars that hit the renowned original underground venue in NYC’s Greenwich Village. Now it’s expanding with 7 and 9 p.m. shows on Mondays and Tuesdays, kicking into a full nightly schedule. This week’s comedians are Jon Fisch, Eddie Ifft, Rocky Dale Davis, Rick Crom and emcee Mark Cohen.

Comedian Doug Benson is used to generating the laughs, but when he visited Opium at The Cosmopolitan, hilarity ensued, Space Odyssey-style. After the show, Benson went backstage to meet the ridiculous and talented crew of the OPM 73.

The Palms has released new details about its upcoming restaurants, and it all starts this week with the opening of the rustic Italian Vetri Cucina, helmed by Philadelphia-based chef Marc Vetri. Veteran Vegas chef Josh Bianchi will be on duty in Vetri’s kitchen. Next up will be celebrity chef Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ in December, a high-energy eatery with barbecue favorites, a food truck on the back patio and live entertainment. And longtime Strip star Bobby Flay will debut seafood restaurant Shark in March.
