A Long Time Playing

The Outlaws’ 1980 interpretation of Stan Jones’ “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend” is opulent and grand and everything that is excessive about Southern rock and the 1980s. It takes some real fortitude to figure out a way to mash up an old-school TV-style western tune with the indulgent double lead guitar attack that is a staple of Southern rock, but “Yippee-yay-ay, yippee-yay-oh,” The Outlaws did it.

The Outlaws serve up plenty of that Southern-fried crunch in their song construction, as they do in many songs performed over the course of a 50-year career, but they also add elements of progressive rock to their extended solos—not often heard in Southern rock. Then again, they have to break the rules. They are The Outlaws. –Jason Harris

It's Pie Time

Cornish Pastry

Cornish Pastry

For a little taste of England, head to the Cornish Pasty Co. in the Arts District. The hip joint features an open kitchen, dark woods, and an intimate bar—and some seriously rocking pies.

There’s an enormous variety, from a traditional meat pasty stuffed with meat, cheese, onion and rutabaga to a veggie cottage pie with Quorn ground beef (a mycoprotein), peas, carrots, mashed potatoes and onions. The Cornish Pasty Co. also makes from two to four vegan options a day. You’re not limited to traditional English fare, though. The pasty list goes on and on: Mexican, Reuben, lamb and mint, spicy asiago chicken, lamb vindaloo, Greek, eggplant Parmesan and a boatload more.

And for dessert? What about sticky toffee pudding or a peanut butter and jelly pasty? Wash it all down with a craft beer and you’re ready to roll. –Nina King
