Her Vegas: Ariana Grande, wax-figure Beyoncé and more
Naughty and Nice
There are many other queens of pop (Rolling Stone, perhaps unsurprisingly, has an actual index), but Ariana Grande might own the most hearts.
On Instagram, she's the most followed woman on the planet. She was Spotify's most-streamed female artist of 2018, and this year had numbers never seen in the platform's history. Billboard's female record for simultaneous hits in the top 40 on the Hot 100 chart recently fell to 11 of her earworms, just one reason she made Time's 2019 list of ultimate influencers.
Grande is definitely the queen of making it all look easy. Hence the shock when she turned out to be human, cancelling her Nov. 17 tour stop in Kentucky due to a painful sinus condition (despite remedy ideas from Barbra Streisand). But she bought lunch for diehards who gathered at the arena anyway, and two days later was in Atlanta blowing the roof off and surprise-dueting with old castmates from her TV days on Nickelodeon (Victorious, Sam & Cat and Winx Club).
Let's just say, with a generous wink, that the girl knows how to rebound.
She brings her Sweetener Tour to the MGM Grand Garden Arena Dec. 15, and fans can expect some holiday magic stirred into smashes like "7 Rings" and "thank u, next." That means the Santa outfits from the latter's hit video, and tracks from 2015 EP Christmas & Chill and 2013 predecessor Christmas Kisses. Based on recent performances, wrapped presents might fly from the stage into the audience.
Whatever the extras, count on Grande's voice (and dimple!) being transcendent. As for the staging, it is playful and popping with color. Dance numbers and solos show the polish she's worked to near flawlessness, while home movies reveal the sweet weirdo under the fame.
Arianators live for such glimpses, so this show makes for the best kind of early Christmas present. –Erin Ryan
