Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort has emerged as the Las Vegas headquarters of myriad female pop superstars. You may remember game-changing residencies from Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez in this venue, and it's currently home to headlining shows for Gwen Stefani, Shania Twain and, coming in 2020, Kelly Clarkson.

But it's the powerful voice and glamorous style of Christina Aguilera that will ring in the new year at Planet Hollywood, performing two more shows in her continuing production The Xperience on Dec. 30-31. It's been a busy month for the 39-year-old singer born on Staten Island, N.Y., as she's been traveling and touring after a mesmerizing November appearance at the American Music Awards. She opened the month with an X Tour stop in Guadalajara, Mexico, and surprised the audience at the Telmex Auditorium when she brought the legendary Alejandro Fernández onstage to perform their 2013 collaboration "Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti."

The entirety of 2019 was big for Aguilera. She followed up her triumphant return to touring in 2018 with the Liberation Tour—her first major road trip since 2006—with the European leg of the X Tour, a summer run that followed her debut at Zappos Theater. More recently she's been celebrating the 20-year anniversary of her debut album, the self-titled smash that included singles "Genie in a Bottle," "What a Girl Wants" and "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)." Her teenage breakthrough is an iconic part of that pop music era.

"I've been working for my whole life, so to reflect on that time and to be here now and as a woman, so sure of myself—and now I have kids who can watch at home—it's really exciting," Aguilera said on the AMA red carpet last month.

She's been just as sure of herself in creating her Vegas show and performing on the Strip. Just days after her opening in June, she sat in Zappos Theater and described the process of creating a massive musical production.

"Coming here, it can be a little intimidating, even coming from the airport and seeing all the billboards," Aguilera told me. "There are so many shows and you're like, 'Wow, this is a spot to be reckoned with,' and you get excited but also nervous. But as a performer, I think the nerves are to be embraced. It's part of the adrenaline rush, the drive that you need to put on a great show.

"If anything, it's an honor, because you're in awesome company and there are special people here who are just so successful and have endured amazing careers and are still killing it," she continued. "And to be surrounded by so many kickass females. Even this house has had these don't-mess-with-us women and we know how to give a show, to put it on and release the magic. It's my turn to bring what I have to offer to the table and it's a beautiful feeling to know there's so much great energy here."
