There is no opening act on New Kids on the Block’s current tour, unless you count New Kids on the Block. Although NKOTB shares the bill on The Mixtape Tour with ’80s pop-chart peers Salt-N-Pepa, Tiffany, Naughty by Nature and Debbie Gibson, the Boston-born vocal group that created the boy-band template has opted out of taking the headliner’s slot.

This can be interpreted as respect towards tourmates, or fans who need their sleep more so than back in the heady days of “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” and “Hangin’ Tough.” It could be their own circadian rhythms that led to Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood to taking the stage first. Regardless of the order of the acts, ever-faithful NKOTB fans will come out and party like it’s 1989.

That was the year the quintet broke into the Top Five with “You Got It (The Right Stuff),” and created a sound and image that would influence subsequent generations of what became known as “boy bands.” NKOTB demonstrates to their cultural descendants how long the original lineup boy bands and vocal groups can endure if they hang tough and take each phase of their career step by step. Yep, they got it.
